Proofreading Marks: Or “What Are Those Squiggles?”
Many editors use terms and marks that relate to the book publishing business and these seem unusual (or just plain weird) to people unfamiliar with them. When I work with clients (both as a writer and editor) I try to use language that makes sense to them, learn the terminology in their field, and “translate” any terms that I need to introduce. The same applies to processes, industry standards, and best practices. Proofreading marks are one of those practices.
